Security bond & OPG step by step
  1. 1. Court order arrives

The deputyship order says what you can and cannot do with P's property and money. Read it carefully — some actions (like selling a house or making gifts) may need extra permission.

  2. 2. Set up the security bond

Most property and financial deputies must buy a security bond — a type of insurance that protects P if money is lost. The court sets the amount; the premium is usually paid from P's funds.

  3. 3. Register with banks and providers

Send a sealed copy of the order to each bank, pension provider, DWP and council. Open a deputyship account in P's name — never mix P's money with yours.

  4. 4. Keep records all year

Record every payment in and out, with receipts. Only spend money in P's best interests, and keep decisions written down.

  5. 5. Annual deputy report to the OPG

Each year the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) asks for a report of decisions, spending and account balances. It is usually done online.
